A Way Out
I like being able to work freely, making abstract paintings without regard to ‘realistic’ depictions; yet still with exacting attention to details. My work is about playing with the expressive qualities of mark making. I feel that the movement of lines, gestures, and forms gives me a simple means to expressing more complex problems and thoughts. Each piece is its own journal entry, song or tangled web of thoughts.
I often begin working as a way of thinking visually or sorting through problems. It becomes a sort of meditation. Through this process of turning other senses off and concentrating acutely on a select few I often become comfortably lost in what I’m doing; very frequently forgetting how long I have been working. I believe it is this attention to details that the work demands which gives me such fulfillment and enjoyment.
The process is the most important aspect of the work for me. I often emerge from a work as if I’d just had a stimulating conversation or indescribable epiphany. It is essential to my well being. It is an end in itself for what it is able to give me.
The work is meant to be subjective, let the eye see what it will.
